Importance of Refresh Rate for Gaming Monitors

Posted on

When it comes to choosing the right gaming monitor, a lot of people go in one of three directions. They will either put a huge focus on the size of the monitor, or they will really care a great deal about the resolution or finally on the price of the monitor. Now we are not here to tell you that these two factors are not important. In fact, they are crucial if you really want to get yourself the best gaming monitor. But they are simply two parts of a three-pronged feature list that you have to ensure is right if you want to get a really great monitor.

The third feature, and the one that is almost always ignored, is the refresh rate. Yes, any mainstream gaming monitor that you try to purchase is going to have a minimum of 60 Hz as the refresh rate. And 60 Hz is not a BAD refresh rate by any means, but it is not a great one either. When you are watching videos on YouTube or doing regular computer work, you are not going to notice any issues at all with such a refresh rate. But if you are playing games on your high end graphics card, you will find that you cannot go over 60 FPS, or frames per second.

Importance of Refresh Rates

What are frames per second, and why do they matter? Frames per second matters because it highlights how quickly a frame is being rendered and shown to you on your screen. If you have a graphics card that is capable of rendering more than 60 FPS for the games that you are playing, but the monitor that you are using is only going to get you up to 60 FPS, then you have a problem. Your system is being bottlenecked by your monitor. You are not experiencing the full potential of your graphics card.

1080p or 1440p?

The monitors that you are going to want to get are either 1080p or 1440p, depending on how much money you have and the quality of your graphics card. But most importantly, they will have a 144 Hz refresh rate. With a refresh rate of this value, it means that you are able to go ahead and reach 120 FPS with the games you are playing. Your games are going to look much smoother when you set them to such a high FPS, and you will feel a performance improvement as you are doing the various in-game actions.

When you decide to go with a 144 Hz monitor, you have to identify whether 1080p or 1440p is the best choice. For the majority of people, the graphics card you own is not going to give you 1440p, 120 FPS gaming performance. It will only go up to 1080p, and you should probably stick with that for your monitor as well. But if you do have the best and most expensive graphics card on the market, you can probably afford a monitor that has a 1440p resolution and a refresh rate of 144 Hz. With either resolution, you will have a fantastic setup!

Summary: It is very important to give the refresh rate of your monitor consideration, especially if you are looking to play games at a high level. A 144 Hz refresh rate provides a vastly superior gaming performance to a 60 Hz monitor.
